Ben A. Minteer's work explores the intersection of environmental ethics, ecology, and conservation, especially the impact of global environmental change on our understandings of environmental responsibility. Two broad questions have driven much of Minteer's research and writing in this area: What responsibilities do we have regarding wild species and communities in a rapidly transforming — and increasingly human-modified — environment? And how can we design effective and ethically well-justified policies that track evolving societal views of biodiversity and ecosystems?
Minteer also writes on the intellectual history of conservation and environmentalism, and on the influence of pragmatist ideas on the development of American environmental thought, politics, and practice. He currently holds the Arizona Zoological Society Endowed Chair in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University, a position established by the Robert Maytag family at the time it made possible the founding of the Phoenix Zoo.
