About the Bachelor of Science in sustainable food systems
The food and agriculture sector is changing in exciting ways, creating demand for graduates who understand the complex interconnections between food, natural resources, policy, economic opportunity and social equity.
The Bachelor of Science in sustainable food systems program prepares students to be innovative problem solvers ready to assume a wide range of food-related careers.
This degree is currently available on the Tempe campus, Polytechnic campus, Downtown Phoenix campus, ASUOnline, and ASU Local@Los Angeles.
Within the Bachelor of Science in sustainable food systems, students may specialize in one of seven focus areas:
- Educational Leadership: Improving food systems through education.
- Procurement: Developing sustainable supply chains.
- Global Engagement: Making change through food and agriculture on a global scale.
- Public Health & Nutrition: Bettering lives through food and health.
- Business & Innovation: Finding solutions in entrepreneurship and agribusiness.
- Policy & Governance: Changemaking through public policy and organizing.
- Ecosystem Science: Managing natural resources for food production.
Learning outcomes
Students in the School of Sustainability master a set of core sustainability concepts that include systems thinking, future thinking, values thinking, strategic thinking, and collaborative competency.
BS in sustainable food systems students will gain a general understanding of sustainability issues as they relate to food and food systems. They will be adaptable, capable of both communicating and learning across a number of disciplines, and have a strong orientation towards problem solving and quantitative methods.
In addition to the common learning outcomes, students will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of sustainable food systems by developing and implementing strategies within a real-world context through inquiry and analysis, problem solving, quantitative reasoning, teamwork and collaboration.
- Demonstrate proficiency in critical, analytic and creative thinking by developing, communicating, and applying practical solutions to food sustainability challenges.
