Determine Your Second Language Requirements for Your Degree

The School of Sustainability requires all students to complete a Second Language Requirement as follows:

Students Pursuing a Bachelor of Arts

Students pursuing the B.A. degree in the School of Sustainability must demonstrate intermediate proficiency in a second language by completing the courses specified with a grade of "C" or higher in each course. Second language course requirements consist of:

  • Completion of second language course work at the intermediate level (202 or equivalent - students completing this requirement in Ancient Greek must take both GRK 301 and 302; students completing the requirement in Portuguese or Romanian must complete POR 314 or ROM 314); OR
  • Completion of a second language course at the 300-level or higher taught in the second language and having 202 or its equivalent as a prerequisite; OR
  • Completion of secondary education at a school in which the language of instruction is not English.

Students Pursuing a Bachelor of Science

Students pursuing the B.S. degree in the School of Sustainability must demonstrate elementary proficiency in a second language by completing the courses specified with a grade of "C" or higher in each course. Second language course requirements consist of:

  • Completion of second language course work at the introductory level (102 or equivalent); OR
  • Completion of a second language course at the 200-level or higher taught in the second language and having 102 or its equivalent as a prerequisite; OR
  • Completion of secondary education at a school in which the language of instruction is not English.

Meeting the Second Language Requirement

First, you will need to decide which second language to pursue. If you already have some proficiency in that second language, you may be required to take a placement test. The Second Language Requirement may be met through coursework, AP/IB/CLEP credit, or through the satisfactory completion of a proficiency exam administered by the School of International Letters and Cultures. Spanish, French, and German proficiency exams are offered by CLEP only. Additional information related to frequently asked questions can be found online and students should contact their academic advisor if they still have unanswered questions.

Review "Credit by Examination" Rules (if necessary)

This step won't apply to all students, but if you have earned credit by examination, such as CLEP, AP, or IB credit, you may want to review more information about how the credit will work.
