To best prepare undergraduate students for a successful transition into graduate school or professional positions after graduation, all students are required to take and successfully complete a three-hour pre-approved applied experience. Applied/Capstone experience options include pursing an internship, workshop, service learning, or research opportunity. For more information about what each opportunity entails, students should speak with their advisor.
Undergraduate students in the School of Sustainability should consult with the internship coordinator before securing an internship experience that will count as credit toward fulfilling degree requirements. Please contact us at (480) 727-6963 to make an appointment with the internship coordinator.

This program is Barrett Honors College and is designed to improve the experience of undergraduate students and support research teams of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. It addresses a limitation prevalent at large research universities: while offering rich and varied research opportunities, they often lack the close community of peer researchers found at small, private colleges. This program is structured to meet the special needs of undergraduates for opportunities to build their professional and research identities and for interdisciplinary contexts in which to participate in the scientific research community.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates is a National Science Foundation program supporting participation in research by undergraduate students. This program engages undergraduates from across the country in research with faculty and graduate students at ASU during the summer.
The School of Sustainability offers at least one applied workshop each semester. An applied workshop is a semester-long course that offers students the opportunity to work on a real-world project. Please check the Courses page of our Web site for a current list of workshops.
The School of Sustainability plans to offer service learning opportunities in the near future.
Although there are select approved experiences that can fulfill the applied/capstone requirement for our undergraduate degrees, there is a wide-range of real-world opportunities that students can participate in at any point in their program. There are volunteer opportunities, study abroad programs, and field experiences. The best way for students to learn about the possibilities is through the “Real World Learning Experiences in Sustainability” blackboard site. All School of Sustainability undergraduate students have access to this site.
